Lessons From the Desert

DSC_0863_Cropped.jpg

The desert is hot, dry, and vast. Driving through, you'll look out your car window into an expansive stretch of brown dirt, reaching back towards the horizon. Waves of heat rise up off the pavement, shimmering. Lizards scurry along the rocks in search of shade. To the untrained eye, nothing seems to be thriving in a land so parched. Yet this place has lots of secrets to share, hidden in it's dusty patches. As you look closer you can see the bright colored fruit of the prickly pear and the soft, white blossoms on the saguaros. They offer nutrients to the roaming families of javelina and nectar to the whizzing hummingbirds. When you accept the invitation of the brown, rolling hills and venture further, you'll stumble across tiny oases, reminding you beauty doesn't fit into one definition. You start to see yourself reflected back you in the desert. You're seemingly small and insignificant, but in fact you're so much more to the world around you. If you take enough time to pause and listen, then the desert will pass down it's wisdom to you too.

I love helping others capture their story to share with the rest of the world, but it all began with knowing my own stories. Going back to what's meaningful in my own life allows me to see the beauty in what's meaningful to others. Here's a bit of my own story through an ode of sorts to a place that raised me.

The Colors of Barrio Viejo

Micaela - Tucson, Arizona Lifestyle Photography

DSC_0036.jpg

In March, I took a trip to Tucson just in time to see all the pretty blooms popping up across the desert. Flagstaff's seasons were a little behind Southern Arizona's at the time so I was elated to see signs of spring. I was also excited to see the beautiful neighborhoods in Tucson, specifically Barrio Viejo. Micaela and I ventured around the bright, colorful homes, stopping to enjoy the hidden gems of each street along the way. My favorite part was finding multiple Little Free Libraries. The little libraries seemed to show how much the neighborhood invests in their community and I love feeling a sense of community! Micaela is also majorly gorgeous and I had a lot of fun getting to snap some photos of her. Enjoy!

Nurturing Rains

Arcosanti in the Rain - Arizona Photography

DSC_7377_3.jpg

As the rain was falling, my friends and I pulled into Arcosanti just in the nick of time. The sun was lowering, inching closer to the horizon, and tours were closing. Yet, by chance, we wound up meeting a guide who happily showed us around, filling us in on the special details of the experimental town. Arcosanti is a more sustainable alternative suggestion to urban sprawl, where the buildings are kept to a limited area so as to make the most use of the resources offered by the surrounding land. The trickling rain brought extra attention to colorful land, highlighting it's potential.

The evening had all of my favorite subjects wrapped up into one: lots of beautiful greenery, a gorgeous, shimmering sunset, unique architecture, and lovely friends. Also the opportunity for lots of candid shots! I hope these photos can bring you along for our rainy little tour.
